The Feminist Bible is a collaborative, conceptual poetic project that aims to rewrite the Bible in a contemporary feminist approach. It calls on women of all backgrounds, sexualities, ethnicities, cultures, languages, and ages to handwrite the original text, changing male names, titles, and pronouns to female alternatives.
The aim is to equalise the imbalance upon which the Bible is built. It was believed by some that the Bible was written by Moses, Paul, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, but it was later deemed more likely to have been written by male priestly authors. In either case, it is a male-created text and particularly male-centred narrative (with 1770 men named in the Bible compared to 93 women). By the end of the project, the Bible should have been reclaimed by women, both those handwriting the text and those featured within it. The project is an inclusive platform for all women, because feminism is not just for one kind of woman, but for all, and if we are alleviating the gender imbalance, we should also aim to alleviate any other imbalance we can; representation of all kinds is invaluable.
The project is ongoing and will only end when the text has been rewritten in its entirety.
